【入学式のこと】

　手元に、常に持ち歩いている令和２年（2020年）３月の新聞記事があります。新型コロナウイルス感染症をCOVID-19と呼ぶように、感染症の始まりは2019年ですが、翌2020年に入って日本でも感染が目立ってきました。その４月には日本全国に緊急事態宣言が発出され学校も休業に。持ち歩いている記事は、緊急事態宣言直前の３月の県内高校の卒業式を扱ったものです。

　この記事が出る少し前の2020年２月ごろ、県教育委員会では、目に見えないウイルス感染症が今後どのような振る舞いをするのか皆目見当がつかない中、県立学校の教育活動をどう行なって行くか、特に人が集まる卒業式や入学式をどうするかの判断を迫られていました。

　最終判断は学校長ですが、県からの通知は、保護者の出席を認めず原則として卒業生だけで時間を短縮して行う、となりました。

　これに対して、後日、県民から多くの苦情が寄せられることになります。なぜ、一生に一度の卒業式に保護者が出席できないのか。至極当然の意見でした。

　新聞記事にはこんな記載があります

　笑顔で学び舎を後にした一人の高校生が「式を開いてもらっただけでありがたい。（お世話になった先生方が）大きく拍手してくれていた。優しさが染みました。」

　別な生徒は、「親にはみてもらいたかったな。後輩たちとも写真を撮りたかった。（でも）そもそも式がなければこのはかまも着られなかった。感謝しかありません。」

　当時、県教育委員会で苦渋の決断に関わった者の一人として、多くの学校で例年とは全く異なる卒業式になったことを思う時、記事にあるような生徒の声に気持ちが救われたことも事実です。

　本年、令和３年（2021年）４月６日、校内の満開の桜のなか、保護者１名の限定参加でしたが松本深志高校の入学式を無事挙行できたことが一番ありがたいことでした。

   I always have with me a copy of a news article written in early March in 2020 about the graduation ceremony of a high school in Nagano Prefecture.

   Early in 2020, an unknown virus COVID-19 was beginning to spread in Japan, and the board of education in Nagano prefecture in charge of all the prefectural schools including public high schools was expected to decide how carefully all the education activities were to be conducted in the spread of the virus, especially how safely the gatherings such as a graduation ceremony were performed.

   Later in April in 2020, almost all the students throughout Japan were asked to stay home under the declaration of a state of emergency by the government.

   Finally the board announced that the graduation ceremony be done without the presence of parents celebrating their graduates.  

   Later, as was expected, many people called or sent messages to the board, telling that they couldn’t understand the way the board decided because the graduation ceremony was a special occasion that celebrates the graduates at school and there was no other alternative, which was a natural reaction.

   According to the article, a student who had just finished the graduation ceremony answered, “I feel happy that our school held a ceremony.  When I saw the teachers who had kindly taught us give us lots of applause when we left the venue, which came straight to my heart.”

   Another student said, “I wish my parents could have seen me attend the ceremony here, and I wanted to take pictures with the juniors.  But on further reflection, without this ceremony I couldn‘t have had the chance to wear this Kimono.  That’s why I ‘d like to thank all the people involved for holding the ceremony.”

   In 2020 I was one of the administrative decision-makers in the board, and I honestly confess that I was somewhat relieved by the comments from such students.

   When I look back on what happened last year, I feel happy that on the 6th of April the entrance ceremony this year was performed at Fukashi with one limited guardian for each freshman attending it.
