【化学オリンピックのこと】
「2021年化学グランプリ一次予選」が行われ、本校の「城井崚佑くん（３年）」が見事予選を通過し、二次選考に進みました。「化学グランプリ」は、日本化学会などが主催し、科学技術振興機構（JST）、高等学校文化連盟の自然科学専門部、名古屋大学の共催で開催されているもので、「国際化学オリンピック」の代表選考を兼ねています。
ここ数年携わってきた本校の西牧岳哉先生（理科）によると、
「本校で一次予選を突破した生徒は、おそらく過去15年以上いなかったと思います。都会の中高一貫校の壁が厚いと考えています。３年生の早い時期に化学の全範囲をカバーできるように努めていることや、一次予選の受験日がとんぼ祭と重ならないなど、数年前から条件は整いましたので、これからも受験者を募っていきたいと思います。城井くんには、頑張ってきてほしいです。」と話しています。
高校生以下の生徒の「化学」の力を競う場として1999年より毎年開催されており、一次選考を突破した成績優秀者約80名が二次選考に進出します。
今回全国では3,844名の参加申し込みがありました。二次選考は実験をともなう記述式試験で、本来は合宿形式で行いますが、今年は新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により１０月に「リモートでの筆記試験」として行われる予定です。

ここまで化学の力をつけてきた城井くんは次のように話をしています。
「普段の授業の内容を基本に、その応用力が試され、知識をもとに考えさせる問題です。自分の強みは一歩踏み込んだところで応用できるところなので、二次試験でも実力を発揮して上位入賞を目指します。
化学は大好きですが、将来は大学で数学を専門に勉強して研究職を目指しています。」
今では、至る所で高校生向けのコンテストやコンクールなど学びの場、挑戦の場が用意されています。個人で参加できるもの、グループで挑戦するものなどさまざまですが、廊下に貼ってあるちょっとした案内や、授業中の何気ない先生の話から、これをやってみようというものをアンテナを高くして見つけ出し、自身の学びを深めるため果敢に挑戦して欲しいと思います。

Mr. Kii Ryosuke, a third-year student, is in the list of roughly 100 students out of 3,844 applicants who passed the first-stage test in the national Chemistry Contest 2021 held by some bodies like the Chemical Society of Japan.
His chemistry teacher Mr. Nishimaki says, “I have never seen the name of the successful student from our school listed in the first-round test for the past 15 years. I think some changes in our school circumstances makes it easy for our students to take part in the contest. I hope he will do his best in the final.”
The promising youth says, “The chemical questions I took at the first round were those which made you think profoundly on chemistry. I am good at applying the basic knowledge I study at school to everything, and I will do my best in the next stage. I like chemistry, but I would like to study mathematics at college for the research career.”
Nowadays there are lots of contests and competitions held throughout Japan. Some require an individual entry, and others need a group application. I hope that the students will try to look for what they want to challenge in the presence of abundant information all around school to improve and enhance their learning.
